iOS Version Adoption Rates (2024)

Apple has kept to a consistent update cycle for iOS since the first few iterations of the iPhone, launching a new version of the mobile operating system every year at its developer conference event, WWDC, usually held in June.

Unlike Google, which has struggled to get all Android users onto the latest version of its software, over 80 percent of iPhone and iPad users tend to update their software within the first few months of the latest update being available.

Apple tends to support iPhones and iPads for a long time, with the iPhone 6S the oldest iPhone still able to receive updates almost a decade after launching.

With every new cycle of iOS comes new developer tools, regulations and tweaks to the front-end and back-end to make the experience better for end users. Apple also tends to launch at least one first-party app every year.

As iOS has grown in complexity, Apple has had to launch more updates in a year to fix bugs and issues on the latest version of iOS. For the past few versions, Apple has published seven updates throughout the course of the year.
