Sector overview
There’s always been a community around keeping fit and eating healthy, but the introduction of the smartphone democratized the ability to track calories, record jogging speeds and interact with friends and others in the community.
Apps like MyFitnessPal and Strava provided real-time tracking, in the form of bar code scanning and GPS tracking, which removed the need to manually log items and events. Apple, Fitbit other fitness tracking suppliers took it a step further, with their own hardware dedicated to tracking health and fitness metrics.
As we entered into the decade, new companies launched tying virtual classes and clubs with physical hardware. Peloton was the most successful of these and rode the pandemic wave, with millions of customers buying its expensive fitness equipment. At the same time, Apple continued to add more health tracking tools to its Watch line.
This hype has worn off slightly post-pandemic, but mobile has supplanted itself as the first point of call of anyone looking to get fit or lose weight.
