Badoo Revenue and Usage Statistics (2024)

Badoo was one of the first of the new generation of dating app services, which broke from the paid match-making formula that had become the norm during the .com era. Instead, users could sign up for free and pay for premium features, such as more likes.

Founded in Moscow in 2006 by Russian entrepreneur Andrey Andreev, Badoo became a popular dating service in Europe and Latin America within the first few years of availability.

In the early 2010s, Badoo jumped on the bandwagon of Facebook social games and puzzles, which were used by many apps as a way to accelerate usage of their core platform. Facebook asked for Badoo to stop this practice in 2012, which led to a downturn in overall usage.

The mid-2010s saw Tinder spring up as the dominant dating app service, which had a lot of the same features that Badoo was offering. While usage was at a similar level, Tinder was far ahead in the North American market, which has much higher average revenue per user for dating apps than Latin America and Europe; where Badoo was popular.

At the same time Tinder was emerging as Badoo’s key competitor, Andreev provided ex-Tinder executive Whitney Wolfe-Herd with an early investment in Bumble. In 2019, Badoo and Bumble were merged into MagicLab, which rebranded to Bumble Inc in 2020 ahead of an IPO.

Badoo is now a subsidiary inside company Bumble Inc and Andreev moved to a new project after the merger. Bumble has said it will continue to operate both platforms independently.
