Deezer Revenue and Usage Statistics (2024)

Deezer is a French music streaming service launched around the same time as Spotify in the mid-2000s. Another similarity to Spotify was prior to the launch of Deezer its founders, Daniel Marhely and Jonathan Benassaya, had launched a music service which had been shut down by royalty agencies.

It took the founders two years to settle the legal disputes and Deezer was the relaunched version. For the first year, Deezer struggled to sign any deals with major music publishers, which meant it had a rather small and independent catalogue of music available.

This improved over the next few years, as Deezer continued to add more users and improve its reputation. By the start of the 2010s, Deezer had the rights to about eight million songs.

Deezer has made several promotional efforts to push its product outside of its home country, but the streaming service still relies heavily on France for subscribers and deals with French mobile phone carriers and broadband service providers.

In 2012, Deezer received $130 million from Access Industries, the conglomerate investment company run by Len Blavatnik. This was used to help Deezer expand into new markets. Access Industries invested more into Deezer in 2016, gaining control of the company.

Deezer announced in 2021 its intention to go public via an SPAC, merging with I2PO onto the Euronext Paris (EPA) stock exchange. It has not had the best time as a public company, with its stock price declining more than 70 percent since it debut on the EPA.
