In a world where on-demand video streaming services are battling for eyeballs with expensive original content, blockbuster movies and all-star casts, Tubi is a firm foot in the other direction. The ad-supported streaming service has a wide range of B-tier movies and TV shows, mostly licensed from third-party studios at cheaper cost.
It is also one of the few to allow viewers to watch for free, without even needing to sign up. Devised in 2014 by Farhad Massoudi and Thomas Ahn Hicks, for the first few years it was really a hodgepodge of content either not picked up by the major networks or released independently.
Its offerings became more palatable as it grew its audience, reaching 20 million users in 2019. It signed a distribution deal with NBCUniversal in that year, adding 400 TV series and films to the app.

Get StartedIn 2020, the Fox Corporation acquired Tubi for $440 million. This provided Tubi with additional cash and a route in to making more deals with entertainment studios. Fox acquired MarVista Entertainment a year later to provide Tubi with more content for its library.
Tubi has grown quite considerably since the pandemic and is challenging some of the biggest streaming services on the planet for total hours watched. It is also beginning to roll out its service to more countries, including the United Kingdom in 2024.
