Before Tinder, Match was the market leader in the dating industry. Launched in 1995, it quickly established itself as the premier service for those looking to date, and was especially dominant in its home market, the United States.

Match was one of the first online dating apps to come about and for many years was known as Match.com. In the 2000s, it partnered with AOL and MSN to bring online dating into the mainstream, partnering with the two most prominent messaging services during that time.

Shortly before the dotcom bubble, Match was sold to American holding company IAC, which purchased several big online dating websites in the 2000s. In 2009, IAC incorporated Match and several other dating apps into Match Group, which would be spun out onto the public market in 2020.

During that 11 year period, Match Group acquired more dating websites and apps that rose to prominence. These included Plenty of Fish, OK Cupid, Tinder and Hinge.

While the namesake, Match, has declined in users and revenue, its other products have kept Match Group growing. The acquisition of Tinder brought Match Group into the mobile era, and it has continued to improve its revenues through Hinge and other products.

We have collected data and statistics on Match. Read on below to find out more. Want to gain more insights? Check out our dating app report.
